A Trip to Another Country Just to Take Photos of my Dogs
Tamara Telkes
Call me crazy, but one weekend last fall I felt like I wanted to take photos of my dogs in a place I’ve never been before, so we got in the car and drove to Graz, Austria. I had a few of the most famous sights I wanted to see in mind, but the main idea was to just walk through the city, see what catches my eye.
Discovering Graz with Dogs
Graz in my experience is really dog friendly, everyone was fine with them at all of the tourist attractions, no one was bothered by them being off leash when we were taking photos, and they were welcome at the restaurant we ate at. It also helped a lot that most of the major sights in Graz are within walking distance for each other, which allowed us to take in more of the city, wander into hidden little streets. My dogs, Lindsey and Dash, of course were the most grateful for all the walking – they loved spending the entire day moving through a new place and got super tired by the time we were headed home from all the sniffing and posing and running around.
Photographing Dogs in Graz
Putting aside all of the touristy things we did, we were also there on a mission: to take as many fun photos of Li and Dash as I can. Not only do these images make for amazing memories of my pups for me, they also serve as an opportunity to practice and get creative, especially since I was shooting on both a digital and an analog camera. So, we started off at the main square and went from sight to sight, looking for the best backdrops.
We saw the famous painted house, and despite it looking breathtaking with all the fine details, it was rather difficult to photograph because of all the traffic and passerby’s.
After that we crossed the river through the Murinsel and realized that the riverbank was a fantastic spot for some quick shots.

As the most challenging part of our trip, we climbed the Schlossberg up to the 13th century clocktower. I have to say, this is one of the most iconic landmarks in the area for a reason, the views from up there of the city was incredible!

For our final images we headed for the stairs again, taking a photo of me and Dash together standing up there, as well as of him and Lindsey in front of the massive, weaving staircase. These photos are probably my favorites, since they kind of feel like my own personal postcards from Graz.
